The professionalisation of technical practice in post-war Britain, particularly during the rise of civic and subsidised theatre building, as an emerging standardisation of specialist labour incorporated new and influential representative bodies.

Professional practice

The places I have worked:


Operations and House Manager

Providing programme and operational delivery of Warwick Arts Centre services; managing all aspects of the front of house areas, operational needs, and the day-to-day running of the building.

Supporting the delivery of a four-year, Arts Council England and University of Warwick funded, capital build project across two phases.

Capital Project experience - supporting the design and delivery of:

Main House Theatre:

  • Renewal and improvements of accessible seating, carpeting and wall finishes

  • Updated technical equipment and wiring

  • Strengthening and renewal of forestage and stage

  • Improving lighting positions

Studio theatre:

  • Improvment of acoustic separation

  • Renewal of floor, technical equipment, and wiring

Backstage performers areas:

  • Refurbishment of dressing rooms and toilet/shower facilities

  • New Visual Arts Gallery

  • Enhanced cafe offer in the double-height space at the front of the new extension

First floor

  • Three new digital Film Theatre auditoria, with high-end digital projection and sound

Centre Manager:

Arts, Learning, and Enterprise

Planning and delivery, from inception, of the effective day to day running of the Wem Town Hall theatre and community centre. A member of the Senior Management team, contributing to the overall management and strategic direction of the programme and venue. Liaison with board, trust and key stakeholders. Acting Projectionist (35mm and digital), A/V, lighting and sound technician. Developed shared training and continual skills development with the technical team of Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury

General Manager

Delivering visual exhibitions, technical support for all events and hires, developing auctions, operating art fairs. Working with local, regional, national and international artists. Development of exhibition space in partnership with Theatre Royal, Newcastle.

Arts Mentor

Koestler mentoring is designed to support people who have experience of the criminal justice system and who have a keen interest in the arts to develop their practice in the community. Koestler mentors support the mentee in developing their skills e.g. building their portfolio, identifying other arts opportunities, disseminating their work and/or applying to educational courses. Mentees are provided with up to 10 mentoring sessions over a 12 month period.


Hatch Arts

A not for the distribution of profit project supporting recently graduated and early career visual artists in the north east of England. Presenting one pilot and three professional exhibitions, across a two year period, located in a range of found and temporary installation spaces.
